Quora Answer: Are You a Revert or a Convert to Islam?

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ   The following is my answer to a Quora question: “ Are you a revert or a convert to Islam? ”   I am a convert to Islam, never a revert.   Some people state that we are “reverts” because of a hadits .   That is rubbish.   There is no such hadits stating that we are all born Muslims.   That is either a misunderstanding or a deliberate mistranslation of the hadits that is muttafaqun ‘alayh , from the Shaykhayn .   This is what happens when ignorant people try to teach Islam.   On the authority of Sayyidina Abu Hurayrah ‘Abd ar-Rahman ibn Sakhr ad-Dawsi az-Zahrani al-Azdi ( r.a. ), the Prophet ( s.a.w. ) said that we are born upon fithrah , and it is our parents who turn us into Jews, Christians or Zoroastrians.   The full text of the entire hadits is here:   فَإِنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ   كَانَ يُحَدِّثُ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا مِنْ مَوْلُو...

We Did Not Choose Islam; Allah (s.w.t.) Accepted Us

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ Sayyidina Hakim ibn Hizam ( r.a. ) was a relative of Sayyidatina Khadijah bint Khuwaylid ( r.a. ), the wife of the Prophet ( s.a.w. ).  In the time before he converted to Islam, he used to buy the daughters of those families who wanted to bury them alive, and raised them as his own.  One day, Sayyidina Hakim ( r.a. ) asked the Prophet ( s.a.w. ) about these good deeds, and whether he would be Rewarded for them.   The Prophet ( s.a.w. ) replied, “These good deeds are the reason you have been Blessed with Islam.”   To be a Muslim is an Honour that Allah ( s.w.t. ) has Dressed us with.  It is not us accepting Him, but Him Accepting us.  So, which Muslim has the right to look down on the non-Muslims?  What is Given can also be Taken.

No Arrogance in Faith

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ As extracted from “The Garden of the Matsnawi - Rumi Selections”; Sayyidina Hakim ibn Hizam ( r.a. ) was a relative of Sayyidatina Khadijah bint Khuwaylid ( r.a. ), the wife of the Prophet ( s.a.w. ).   He was renowned for his mercy and generosity.   Before the rise of Islam, he used to buy the daughters of those families who wanted to bury them alive and graciously assumed the responsibility of taking care of them.   Sayyidina Hakim ( r.a. ) asked the Prophet ( s.a.w. ) about these good deeds which he had done prior to his declaration of faith in Islam.   The Prophet ( s.a.w. ) replied: “These good deeds are but the reasons that brought you the honour of being Blessed with Islam.”   To be a Muslim is an Honour that Allah ( s.w.t. ) has Dressed us with.   It is not us accepting Him.   We must never take that Divine Dress for granted.   And we must not be arrogant in the faith.   It is sunnah to be...
