Sincere Tyrannies

Image
بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ Clive Staples Lewis wrote, “Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive.  It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies.  The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

God’s House

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ Clive Staples Lewis wrote, “Imagine yourself as a living house.  God Comes in to Rebuild that house.  At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is Doing.  He is Getting the drains right and Stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing, and so you are not surprised.  But presently He Starts Knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably, and does not seem to make any sense.  What on earth is He Up To?  The explanation is that He is Building quite a different house from the one you thought of - throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards.  You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is Building a palace.  He Intends to come and Live in it Himself.”

“Defending” God

Image
بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ God does not need us to defend Him.   What extremists defend are their conceptions of a limited god.   Clive Staples Lewis wrote, in “The Problem of Pain”, “A man can no more diminish God’s Glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the Sun by scribbling the word ‘darkness’ on the walls of his cell.”

The Reality of Divine Tests

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ Clive Staples Lewis wrote, “God has not been trying an experiment on my faith or love in order to find out their quality.   He Knew it already.   It was I who did not.”
