The Most Wretched of Men
بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ It is recorded in Musnad ibn Hanbal , al-Mustadrak asw-Swahihayn , as-Sirah an-Nabawiyyah , and al-Bidayah wa an-Nihayah , that the Prophet ( s.a.w. ) saw Sayyidina ‘Ali ibn Abu Thalib ( k.w. ) and Sayyidina Abu al-Yaqzhan ‘Ammar ibn Yasir ( r.a. ) stretched out and asleep on the soft ground, and woke them up. He then touched Sayyidina ‘Ali ( k.w. ) with his blessed hands and said, “Awaken, O Abu Turab!” “Abu Turab” was the kunya of Sayyidina ‘Ali ( k.w. ). The Prophet ( s.a.w. ) asked, “Would you like me to tell you of the most wretched of men?” He then said, “There are two of them. One is Uhmir ats-Tsamud, who slew the camel,” referring to the miraculous camel of Swalih ( a.s. ) Mentioned in the Qur’an. He continued, “The other is,” pointing to Sayyidina ‘Ali’s ( k.w. ) head, “the person who strikes here with his sword, smearing your beard with blood.”
