The Sharing Group Discussion on Sayyidina ‘Ali ibn Abu Thalib’s (k.w.) Monogamy

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ Sister Inga Härmälä asked, on The Sharing Group, on the 24 th October 2017, “Can polygamy be considered a sunnah ?   The Prophet ( s.a.w. ) himself set an example of monogamy and later an example of a type of polygamy which is prohibited for normal Muslims more than 4 wives.   So we cannot see his type of polygamy as a sunnah for us to follow, right?   On the other hand, the marriage contracts he negotiated for his daughters, at least in the case of Sayyidatina Zaynab ( r.a. ) and Sayyidatina Fathimah az-Zahrah ( r.a. ) were strictly monogamous.   So which of these sunan can we follow?”   Brother Terence Helikaon Nunis: The Prophet ( s.a.w. ) married widows, single mothers and women considered ugly, poor, old, sickly or otherwise undesirable.   Who can live up to that?   It is an easier sunnah to marry one wife and fulfill one’s obligations, than to marry many and disappoint them all.   More than one ...

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ Sayyidina Abu ‘Amr ‘Utsman ibn ‘Affan ( r.a. ) was instrumental in the marriage of Sayyidina ‘Ali ibn Abu Thalib ( k.w. ) to Sayyidatina Fathimah az-Zahrah ( r.a. ).  Imam Abu al-Hasan ‘Ali ibn ‘Isa ibn Abi al-Fath al-Arbali ( r.a. ), a Shi’ah scholar, mentioned this in his Kashf al-Ghummah .  He recorded that Sayyidina ‘Ali ( k.w. ) said, “Then, the Messenger of Allah ( s.a.w. ) told me, ‘Go now and sell your armour and come back with its value so I may prepare what is good for you and Fathimah.’  So, I went and sold my armour to ‘Utsman ibn ‘Affan for 400 darahim .   When the money was in my hand and the armour was in his hands, ‘Utsman said to me, ‘Abu al-Hasan!  Do you not need the armour more than I do and do you not need the money more than I do?’  I answered with a yes.  So, he said, ‘Then take back the armour.  It is a gift from me to you.’  So, I took back the armour and the money and went to ...

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ   It is said that when Sayyidatina Fathimah az-Zahrah ( r.a. ) saw her father constantly saying, “My ummah ,” out of his concern for them, she also wanted to do something herself for the benefit of the ummah .   When Allah ( s.w.t. ) Ordered the Prophet ( s.a.w. ) to find a husband for his daughter, Rasulullah ( s.a.w. ) called his swahabah ( r.a. ).   The Prophet ( s.a.w. ) said that the one amongst them who was able to complete the recitation of the Qur’an the quickest, had his permission to ask for the hand of his daughter, Sayyidatina Fathimah ( r.a. ), with her consent.   So, that night, the swahabah stayed at the mosque to khatm the Qur’an.   All of them were there the entire night except Sayyidina ‘Ali ibn Abu Thalib ( k.w. ), who went home and slept after a short while.   Everyone, including the Prophet ( s.a.w. ), assembled in the mosque when Sayyidina Bilal ibn Rabah ( r.a. ) called the adzan for faj...
