Quora Answer: Can Non-Muslims Wear a Hijab?

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

The following is my answer to a Quora question: “Is it acceptable for non-Muslims to wear a hijab?

Non-Muslims were wearing the “hijab” long before there was an Islam.  People call it a scarf.  There is nothing special about the hijab.  It is not sacred.  It is a piece of cloth covering the head.  People wear it for a variety of reasons, from the belief that jurisprudence requires it, to cultural adherence, to expediency, to simply aesthetics.  The hijab has no position in theology, and Muslims have no ownership of it.
