Quora Answer: As a Muslim Waiter, is It Haram to Serve Alcohol to Non-Muslims?

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

The following is my answer to a Quora question: “I am a Muslim working as a waiter in a resort.  Is it haram to serve alcohol to non-Muslims? Is my salary haram as well?

Our religion is based on logic, not blindly quoting narrations out of context.  You are working as a waiter, and your job is to serve people.  You are not responsible for the running of the place, or its management.  You have no say on the menu.  You cannot be held responsible for things out of your control.  Alcohol is not haram to non-Muslims.  Just as we do not want others to impose their religion on us, we do not impose ours on them.  What they order is none of your concern.

It is wajib for you to take care of yourself and your family.  You are fulfilling that working there.  If you can find a better opportunity, by all means take it.  But if you cannot, then there is no reason for you to leave your job, and impose hardship upon those you are supposed to be providing for.
