Quora Answer: Why is the Testimony of a Non-Muslim Unacceptable?

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

The following is my answer to a Quora question: “Why is the testimony of a non-Muslim unacceptable?

The only time where there is a requirement for the witnesses to be Muslim would be in instances where the testimony pertains to an act of worship.  These would include the nikah, marriage ceremony; the witness for thalaq, divorce; the witness for fara’idh, inheritance according to shari’ah; and such like.  It would not make sense that in the case of a crime, or the signing of a business contract, for example, that the witness must be a Muslim.
