Quora Answer: What Do Muslims Believe about Mountains Based on the Qur’an?

The following is my answer to a Quora question: “What do Muslims believe about mountains based on the Qur’an?  Apparently, they are pegs or something?

You are referring to this verse:

Have We not Made the Earth as a wide expanse, and the mountains as pegs? (Surah an-Naba’:6-7)

In modern physical geography, it is proven that mountains have deep roots beneath the surface, and that these roots reach several times their elevation above the surface.  This knowledge of their roots or “pegs” as the Qur’an Mentions, was only known in the second half of the 19th century.
