Quora Answer: Islam Forbids Eating Pork, but Does It Forbid Handling Pork?

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

The following is my answer to a Quora question: “Islam forbids eating pork, but does it also forbid handling pork?

No.  Pork is considered najis al-mughalazhah, the highest form of impurity.  So, whilst precautions must be taken to ritually cleanse oneself, there is no prohibition against handling it.  It is, however, discouraged, since it is ritually impure.  Culturally, however, many Muslims have an aversion to handling pork.  This is not a jurisprudential injunction within the religion, although many mistake it as such.
