The Guarded Tongue
Shaykh Muhammad Nazhim ‘Adil al-Haqqani
said, “If fear of God is grounded in the heart, the tongue will never speak
that which is of no purpose.”
Shaykh Nazhim was not instructing anyone
to speak less. He was offering a way to
test what sits in the heart by observing what the tongue produces without
prompting. A heart grounded in fear of
Allah does not need external censorship, because purposeless speech simply
stops arising from it. The tongue is a
symptom. The heart is the disease or the
cure.
