The Revelation of the Qur’an

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

The following is extracted from “The Prophet Muhammad Muswthafa the Elect (s.a.w.)”, by Shaykh ‘Utsman Nuri Tufbas. 

Having completed the six-month preparation toward perfecting his spiritual development so that he was now ready to receive Divine Revelation, Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) was now forty years old.  It was the seventeenth day of the holy month of Ramadhan. 

The Prophet (s.a.w.) was in the Cave of Hira as usual, when Jibril (a.s.) suddenly appeared and said, “Read!” 

“I cannot read”, answered our Beloved Prophet (s.a.w.).  Thereupon, the angel seized and constricted the Prophet (s.a.w.) so hard that he left him almost unable to breathe. 

“Read!” Jibril (a.s.) then ordered once more. 

But the Light of Being (s.a.w.) responded in the same manner: “I cannot read!” 

The angel then seized him for the second time, compressing the Prophet (s.a.w.) until he had no strength to remain on his feet, repeating the command once again: “Read!” 

“I cannot read!” answered the Blessed Prophet (s.a.w.), as if urging the angel to indicate what exactly it was he wanted him to read. 

Jibril (a.s.) then forcefully squeezed the Light of Being (s.a.w.) for the third time and then released him, beginning shortly thereafter to reveal the very first Revelation: 

سُوۡرَةُ العَلق

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

ٱقۡرَأۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ (١) خَلَقَ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ مِنۡ عَلَقٍ (٢) ٱقۡرَأۡ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلۡأَكۡرَمُ (٣) ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلۡقَلَمِ (٤) عَلَّمَ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ مَا لَمۡ يَعۡلَمۡ (٥) 

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Proclaim (or Read!)!  In the Name of your Lord and Cherisher, Who Created ― Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood: Proclaim!  And your Lord is Most Bountiful ― He Who Taught (the use of) the Pen ― Taught man that which he knew not. (Surah al-‘Alaq:1-5) 

With this Divine Command, the Revelation of the Sacred Qur’an, the greatest benevolence of the Lord for the whole of mankind, began its long course of Revelation through the person of Muhammad the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.).

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ We consider this verse:   سُوۡرَةُ الطّلاَق ... وَمَن يَتَّقِ ٱللَّهَ يَجۡعَل لَّهُ ۥ مَخۡرَجً۬ا (٢) وَيَرۡزُقۡهُ مِنۡ حَيۡثُ لَا يَحۡتَسِبُ‌ۚ وَمَن يَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسۡبُهُ ۥۤ‌ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بَـٰلِغُ أَمۡرِهِۦ‌ۚ قَدۡ جَعَلَ ٱللَّهُ لِكُلِّ شَىۡءٍ۬ قَدۡرً۬ا (٣)   … And for those who recognise Allah, He (Ever) Prepares a way out.   And He Provides for him from (sources) he never could imagine.   And if anyone puts his trust in Allah, sufficient is (Allah) for him.   For Allah Will surely Accomplish His Purpose: verily, for all things has Allah Appointed a due proportion. A Brief Biography of Shaykh Ibrahim ibn ‘Abdullah Niyas al-Kawlakhi (q.s.)

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ   The following was compiled from various sources from amongst the muridun of Shaykh Ibrahim ibn ‘Abdullah Niyas al-Kawlakhi ( q.s. ).   Shaykh Ibrahim Niyas ( q.s. ), as the name is transliterated here from the Arabic, is more commonly known “Ibrahim Niass”.   It also written as “Ibrahima Niasse” in French, and “Ibrayima Nas” in Wolof.   Formally, he is Shaykh al-Islam al-Haj Ibrahim ibn al-Haj ‘Abdullah at-Tijani al-Kawlakhi Niyas ( q.s. ) in Arabic.   He was a major leader of the Tijani Sufi order in West Africa.   His followers in the Senegambia region affectionately refer to him in Wolof as “ Baye ”, or “Father”.   He is the founder of the Ibrahimiyyah branch of the Tijaniyyah .   In Arabic, we designate ourselves as the people of al-Faydhah at-Tijaniyyah , “The Divine Flood of the Tijani”.   In Wolof, the Tijani of Senegal call themselves Talibe Baye , meaning “Disciples of Baye ”.   Outsiders often refer to his disciples as Naseen , w
