Kalimah Tammah, Ruqyah Jibril (a.s.)

This du’a was taught to us by Mu’Alim at-Tarimi, Shaykh Zakariya ibn ‘Umar Bagharib (q.s.) many years ago.  He said it was one of the most powerful du’a of protection Given.  It is a du’a of protection against the ghayb, against sihr and against the evil intentions of men.

Bismillah ar-Rahmaan ar-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious the Most Merciful, I seek refuge in Allah the Most Generous, and by His Perfect Words whose boundaries cannot be exceeded by anyone, whether he be devout or a criminal, from the evil that descends from the heavens, or that which remains ascended within it, and from the evils that multiply within the earth, and the evil that comes out from it, and from the temptations of the night and the day, and from the visitors of the night and the day except those that come in goodness, O Most Gracious.

During the Isra’ of the Prophet (s.a.w.), he came to a place where he smelled the sweet fragrance of Sayyidah Masyitah (r.a.), Pharaoh’s hair-comber.  She was martyred with her family for refusing to renounce her belief in Allah (s.w.t.).  It was at this juncture that the Prophet (s.a.w.) saw an ‘ifrit, a type of jinn, following him from behind.  He was carrying a brand of fire, with the intention of attacking the Prophet (s.a.w.).  The angel Jibril (a.s.) taught him the Kalimah Tammah to destroy the ‘ifrit.  It is also known as Ruqyah Jibril because of this.

When the Prophet (s.a.w.) recited this, the ‘ifrit tripped and fell dead, and the brand of fire he was carrying was extinguished.  This invocation is used to extinguish the fires of the jinn and the shayathin.  It also extinguishes the fires of hasad, envy, and fasad, corruption.

The Perfect Word of Allah (s.w.t.) is the Qur’an.  It is the Eternal Speech Sent down to us as Revelation.  In it are the secrets of Creation.  The evil that descends from the heavens refers to calamities, illnesses, and that which is Sent down.  The evil that ascends to the heavens are the records of bad deeds and the results of bad intentions.  Every passing thought is also a du’a, and a bad thought of us is actually a du’a against us.  The evils on earth refer to disturbances by the shayathin, the jinn and men, as well as wild beasts.  It also covers threats that originate from them such as plots, transgressions, threats, slander, and wars.  The evils that come from the earth refer to earthquakes, volcanoes, the hidden dangers of the world and buried secrets that may harm.
