The Wolf That Spoke

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Among the miracles of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) is the story about the wolf that spoke and testified that Muhammad (s.a.w.) is the Messenger of Allah.  Imam Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Hanbal (r.a.) narrated it from Sayyidina Abu Sa’id Sa’id ibn Malik al-Khazraji al-Khudri (r.a.) with a sound chain of transmission.

In this narration, Sayyidina Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (r.a.) said, “Once, when a shepherd was grazing his sheep in al-Harrah, a wolf came to eat one of his sheep.  The shepherd stood between the wolf and the sheep to prevent the wolf from attacking the sheep.  The wolf sat on his tail and spoke to the shepherd.  It said, ‘Do you not fear Allah?  You prevent me from the sustenance which Allah has Prepared for me.’

The shepherd said, ‘What an astonishing thing!  A wolf sitting on its tail is speaking in the speech of humans!’

The wolf continued, ‘Let me tell you about something even more astonishing.  The Messenger of Allah is between the two peaks Harrah telling the people about the news of the previous nations.’

The shepherd took his sheep and went to Madina, put his things in a place, and went to the Prophet (s.a.w.) and told him about the story of the wolf.  The Prophet (s.a.w.) went out to the people, and said to the shepherd, ‘Stand up and tell them what you saw.’  The shepherd told the people about what the wolf said.  The Prophet (s.a.w.) said, ‘This shepherd said the truth.  Know that among the signs of the Day of Judgement is that the wild animals would speak to the people.  By Allah, the One Who Controls my soul, the Day of Judgement would not occur until the beasts speak to the people.’”

This is one of the miracles of the Prophet (s.a.w.).  It consists of an animal speaking and testifying that the Prophet (s.a.w.) is truthful, and that he is the Messenger of Allah.
