The Du’a of the Quthb of Homs

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

The following is taken from The Du’a of the Quthb, Shaykh Muhammad Sa’id Kuhil ash-Shadzili (q.s.) from Homs.

We present the du’a of the erudite scholar, the Quthb of Homs, Shaykh Muhammad Sa’id Kuhil ash-Shadzili (q.s.).  The late shaykh was known to read this every morning before fajr.

Allahumma maa aswbaha bii min ni’mati aw bi’ahadin min khalqika faminka wahdika laa shariika laka falaka al-hamd wa laka ash-shukr.  Allahumma ij’al aj’alu awwala hadzaa an-nahaar swalaahan wa awsathuhu najaahan wa akhiruhu falaahan.  Allahumma al-hamanii fiihi dzikrika wa shukrika wa husni ‘ibaadatik. Allahumma matti’ani bi asw-swihati wa al-‘aafiyyati hatta ataqawwiya ‘alaa thaa’atika.  Wa as’aa limardhaatika.  Allahumma swalli ‘alaa Sayyidinaa Muhammadin Sayyidi Muttaqin wa Imaama al-‘Aabidiin wa Rasulu Rabb al-‘Aalamiin.  Swalawatullah wa malaa’ikatuhu jami’i khalqihi ‘alayka yaa Sayyidii yaa Rasulullah wa ‘alaa ali baytika wa aswhaabika ajma’iin.

“O Allah!  Whatever has reached me this morning of a bounty or anybody else of Your Creation is from You Alone, there is no partner with You.  Thus, indeed all praise and gratefulness is Due to You Alone.  O Allah!  Make the beginning of this morning goodness, its middle success and its end a reaping of rewards.  O Allah!  Inspire me in this time, Your remembrance and thankfulness and good worship of You.  O Allah!  Let me enjoy good health and well-being so that I may have strength to worship You, and seek Your Contentment.  O Allah!  Send Your Prayers upon our master, Muhammad, the Master of the Pious, Leader of the Worshipers and the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds.  May the Prayers of Allah, His angels and the entire Creation be upon you my master, the Messenger of Allah and upon your household and companions, all of them.”

  1. MediaCurves.com conducted a recent follow-up study among 1,431 Americans about their perceptions of woman wearing a traditional Muslim shawl, or hijab. The results found many positive changes in the respondent’s views with regard to the photo of a woman wearing a hijab. The woman with a shawl was viewed as more friendly, beautiful, and less strict, compared to an identical study that was run in January 2008. Respondents were also more welcoming of the idea of the woman depicted living in their neighborhood than in 2008.

  2. That's interesting. However, whilst it is encouraged to wear the hijab of sorts, it isn't the most important thing in the world for someone who wants to convert to Islam.

The Qur'an itself never mandated it. And over the years, the definition of the aurad of a female has differed slightly amongst the various math'haib and scholars. What is important is the modesty of dress and even more pertinent, the modesty of behaviour.

"O believing women... lower your gaze and do not stamp your feet..."

Furthermore, the modesty of women is also linked to the behaviour of men.

"O believing men... lower your gaze..."

Much of the impositions are cultural rather than religious. And it is important to understand that before making it a requirement.

The Shari'ah is Divine Law. It is a Rahmah. It cannot be zulm (oppression) nor an instrument of it.

Interestingly, the people who seem to make the most noise about hijab are men.
