Quora Answer: What is Your Opinion of Muslim Scholars Who Converted to Christianity?

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

The following is my answer to a Quora question: “As a Muslim, what do you think about former Muslim scholars who converted to Christianity?

Should it really matter?  Religion is a free market of ideas, and people have the right to choose their path and believe whatever they want to believe.  In the same vein, we should all embark on that journey to discover our own personal reflection of the truth.  We are not supposed to follow celebrities, lest we take them as gods, but our own understanding of the Divine.  As such, people coming to, and people leaving Islam should have no impact on us.  Our beliefs are not tied to personalities.  Our Islam is not enhanced because people come to the religion, any more than it should be diminished because people leave, no matter who they are, and what their numbers.
