Correcting the Ummah

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

So many people, especially from the religious schools, say they want to go to al-Azhar and any number of institutions learn Islam so that they can correct the ummah.  Would it not be better to learn so that one can better understand the religion, and to better emulate the Prophet (s.a.w.)?  And to learn compassion and try to understand people, especially those struggling with their faith?  Did not the great scholars seek to correct themselves first?  When did Muslims stop worshipping Allah (s.w.t.), and start worshipping “shari’ah”?  In this case, specifically their narrow understanding of it.  Heaven forbid there be more such asatidzah.
