Seek Obscurity

Shaykh Muhammad Nazhim Adil al-Haqqani (q.s.) said, “Maryam (a.s.) said, ‘If only I were nameless and forgotten.’  She has taught all mankind to seek only obscurity in the sight of the world, not to desire recognition.  The hankering for power and fame is the heaviest burden anyone can shoulder.  I do not advise anyone to pursue fame: seek only to be forgotten in the Ocean of Unity of Allah (s.w.t.).”

And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm-tree: she cried (in her anguish), “Ah!  Would that I had died before this!  Would that I had been a thing forgotten and out of sight!” (Surah Maryam:23)
