Halting an Earthquake

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Imam Abu Naswr Taj ad-Din ʻAbd al-Wahhab ibn ʻAli as-Subki (r.a.) wrote, in Thabaqat ash-Shafi’iyyah al-Kubra’, “Once upon a time, there occurred an earthquake in Madinah al-Munawwarah, and the earth started jolting severely.  Observing that, Sayyidina Abu Hafsw ‘Umar ibn al-Khaththab al-Faruq (r.a.) became furious, and while striking his whip on the earth, ‘Umar (r.a.) said, ‘O Earth!  Stay still!  Did I not maintain equity and justice upon you?’  Hearing the infuriated order, the earth became still, and the earthquake stopped.”
