Quora Answer: How Would Illustrations in Medical Books or Anatomical Models be Regarded in Islam?

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

The following is my answer to a Quora question: “How would illustrations in medical books or anatomical models be regarded in Islam?

There is no controversy in this matter.  They are perfectly acceptable, and necessary.  The prohibition is only with regards to illustrations for the purpose of worship.  Whilst drawings for the sake of art is frowned upon in many quarters, this is more a cultural affection than an actual religious prohibition.  What makes a drawing or illustration haram in jurisprudence is the intent of it.  Any drawing, in and of itself, is not haram.
