Those Deserving Charity

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

There was once a rich man who wanted to give charity but he was not sure if he could give it to the right people, so he went to see the Mufti of Baghdad, Shaykh Muhyi ad-Din Abu Muhammad ibn Abu Swalih ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani (q.s.), and asked, “How do I give charity to people if I do not know whether they are deserving or not?”

Shaykh ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani (q.s.) replied, “Give to them, whether they are deserving or undeserving, so that Allah will Give to you whether you are deserving or undeserving.”

We must never think that the charity we give is ours.  We are merely instruments of His Generosity when His Provision for all Creation was already Written.  It is His Favour upon us that the deed is Written as ours.
