Quora Answer: The Existence of God Independent of His Creation

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Question: According to Islamic theology, what is the meaning of the Existence of God Independent of His Creation?  According to Christian theology, the meaning of the Existence of God is love.  That is, the three Persons loving each other.  That is, the meaning of the Existence of God Independent of His Creation is love.  However, according to Islamic theology what is the meaning of the Existence of God Independent of His Creation?

Answer: You have misunderstood what it means even from Christian theology.  In essence, God is the Creator.  He is Immanent as well as Transcendent.  His Transcendence means that He is beyond Creation, and is no limited by it.  From a Christian perspective, there are some complications in the doctrine due to the Second Person in the Trinity, Jesus (a.s.).

From a Muslim perspective, there is no such complication.  God is Absolute and Unlimited, neither bound by space nor time.  It is like the distinction between the artist and the art.  The artist exists without the art.  The art cannot be without the artist.

On the issue of His Relationship with Creation, we were Created to serve Him.  Nothing that we have, not even the next breath, belongs to us, and everything belongs to Him.  How we relate to Him is based on how we know Him.  Some relate through awe, some through love, and some through fear.
