The Adab of the Tavern

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Shaykh Abu Faydhan Faridi Muhammad Harun Riedinger, (q.s.) wrote:

“When at the tavern of the lovers,

The bartender pours out his wine for you

Without a measure and without a charge,

Do you then make it a condition

To know who was the craftsman

That made the jug, from which your drink is poured,

Or know, whose feet they were

That did the treading of the grapes?

And if you knew all that,

Would it have any bearing

On the virtue of your drunkenness?

If that’s the case, you might be better off,

Buying your booze at the department store;

And just make sure

The bar-code is in its proper place,

And all the product information is complete;

And just make sure it says somewhere

‘Satisfaction guaranteed.’”
