The Enemy of Man

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

The following is adapted from a swuhbah by Shaykh Muhammad Nazhim Adil al-Haqqani (q.s.) on the 03rd March 2010.

Knowledge is of different categories, just like medicine.  Some are for infants and some are for adults.  The dosages and potency of the medicine is different.  Similarly, if our shuyukh were to teach a young child about adulthood, the child may be able to understand the portions of the lesson, concerning the physical aspects of adulthood, but it would be impossible for him to understand about the emotional states of adults.  Shaykh Nazhim’s (q.s.) lessons are meant for a broad worldwide audience, so there will be portions that we will be able to understand if we try, though there may be other parts that are beyond us for now.  If we understand absolutely nothing, then we are at the level of animals, for they too understand nothing.

To understand something, we must listen to the same matter many times.  For example, a famous Arabic teacher honed his skills by teaching his goat.  Each time he asked his goat if he understood the lesson, the goat simply bleated and the teacher would repeat the lesson.  Eventually, with such regular repetitions, he became an expert in Arabic.  Today, we are like goats, bleating, without understanding, during each swuhbah.  So we must try to understand that we can only teach something that we have learnt and understood.  We must at least understand that we are not a donkey or a wolf; we are Bani Adam, with a purpose in our Creation, for every Creation has a purpose.

After Allah (s.w.t.) Announced to the angels that He was going to Place mankind as the khalifah on earth, the angels came to know that mankind was a violent beast, a wild and unrestrained being – they were astonished at Allah’s (s.w.t.) Decision.  Here is an important lesson.  We should have unwavering faith in Allah’s (s.w.t.) Decisions, in His Will and in His Wisdom and not let our small minds and shallow knowledge, cloud our acceptance of His Judgement.  Allah (s.w.t.) Taught Adam (a.s.) the names of all things in Creation.  When the angels were finally introduced to Adam (a.s.), he was able to demonstrate the superior intellect that is our crowning glory.

Adam (a.s.), was merely taught the names of things but not told the secrets of it.  It is like us looking at the Sun.  We all know that there is a Sun in the sky but in reality, we do not know the actual secret of its Creation.  Even the Sun itself does not understand what it really is.  Only Allah (s.w.t.), its Creator Knows.  We compare this with the knowledge that was bestowed on Rasulullah (s.a.w.).  He was Taught the function, reality and secrets of all Creation, not just about the outer form like Adam (a.s.).  Adam (a.s.) knew the name; Rasulullah (s.a.w.) knew the entire being behind the name.  He was Given an ocean of knowledge for each object in Creation.

We look at the Honour Allah (s.w.t.) Bestowed on Adam (a.s.) and Bani Adam.  It is an Honour beyond what the angels have.  It is the greatest honour in Creation to be His khalifah.  It is this Honour that Shaythan wanted for himself and was denied.  And that made him into our fiercest enemy.  So we must beware, because the ultimate enemy of mankind is Shaythan.

“Did I not enjoin on you, O you children of Adam, that ye should not worship Satan; for that he was to you an enemy avowed? ― (Surah YaSin:60)

It is clear to us why Shaythan is our most terrible enemy but why is we enemies to our fellow men?  All of us have been Honoured by Allah (s.w.t.).  Those who follow Shaythan’s school of thought are against humanity.  They are against the honour of their fellow men.  We who have been Granted such Honour in the Divine Presence are striving against each other, living as enemies.  What sort of foolishness is this?  Is such despicable behavior befitting us?  Were we Given immeasurable Honour and respect just to come to earth and exist as enemies to our fellows?  We must identify the reasons for our enmity.   Those are devilish traits that we must remove from ourselves.  Every intention, that leads us to enmity, leads us to Hell.  Allah (s.w.t.) has Said that Shaythan is our enemy, so anyone with enmity to mankind is Shaythan himself.

  2. Assalamu'Alaikum,

You'd be surprised what I think about a lot of things. And it most definitely is not against any teachings of my tariqa'.

All these fatwa contradict one of the basic rules of fiqh - common sense.

    Wassalam.
